Brixton Soup Kitchen is extending its help to local people in need by offering confidence-boosting counselling.

Kitchen founder Solomon Smith has teamed up with life coach Sarah Jones to run regular “motivation” sessions at the Coldharbour Lane base, helping to give visitors the confidence to get into work.

On Friday (1 February) she organised a “Coaching in the Kitchen” taster for her service, chatting with visitors who had dropped in for lunch.

She said: “I went through hard times myself, but what got me out of them was changing my mindset. I was coaching myself. Without that determination you can’t overcome the challenges.”

She said she was “inspired by what Solomon is doing and staying so close to the community.”

The soup kitchen has arrangements with local firms and outlets for donations and the supply of goods and food – including a new agreement with the Nando’s restaurant opposite the Academy for a weekly delivery of chicken.

Solomon Smith said: “We don’t just do food here, we provide advice to people and help to get work. Sarah is very confident, a new face, who can help them into a positive mindset.”
